Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones Announces Bid For Congress

RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) - Sacramento County sheriff Scott Jones is running for congress.

Jones announced his bid at a press conference Monday in Rancho Cordova. A Republican, Jones will be competing against Democratic Representative Ami Bera for the county's 7th Congressional District.

During today's event, Jones stressed immigration reform and safety against terrorism and violence.

"With the tragic events that occurred last year in our department, immigration reform became a particular focus and passion of mine. The system is broken, there is no political courage or will in the executive branch to change it, and Americans in every state on every day are being victimized because of its failure. After making a direct appeal to the President for reform, I was launched into the national discussion on that issue. Just as becoming Sheriff allowed me a broader perspective for this county, that journey gave me a national perspective," said Jones.

Former Sheriff John McGinness, former Congressman Doug Ose, and State Senator Jim Nielsen are among those endorsing Jones.

The 7th District includes Elk Grove, Folsom, Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova as well as a large portion of unincorporated Sacramento County.
