Shasta Lake Resort Pulling Out Of New Melones Reservoir Marina

Despite the rain, the drought is forcing one business to change its plans, closing a marina on the New Melones Reservoir.

Robert Broglio is an avid jet skier who says the marina on the lake has been helpful when there's an unexpected issue on the water.

"It's a savior," he said. "I broke down out here on a jet ski one day and had to rent a boat."

Visitors rent houseboats, kayaks and paddleboards, as well as fueling up and buying supplies.

But, blaming the drought and the end of its contract, Shasta Lake Resort will no longer provide marina services for the Bureau of Reclamation.

The company that runs the marina will walk away when the summer season ends after Labor Day.

That news has businesses like Glory Hole Sports worried. If a new company doesn't come in to operate the marina, the concern is fewer people will visit the lake and spend cash at local businesses.

"I don't know what kind of impact it's going to have at this point," said John Liechty. "There might not be as much traffic in the summer going out to the lake. That could hurt a little bit."

Despite the drought, water levels were at 949 feet above sea level, high enough for people enjoying the lake today.

The Bureau of Reclamation is working on its next move to provide marina service.
