Scientists Help Seahawks Fans Stomp Up A 'Kam Quake'
In 2011, ESPN reported that Lynch ran a 67-yard touchdown that collected enough enthusiasm from over 65,000 people to shake Seattle's CenturyLink Field, formerly Qwest Field, so hard that it that it set off a seismic monitoring station 100 yards away from the stadium. Lynch's quake, now called the 'Beast Quake' was verified by University of Washington scientist Dr. John Vidale.
Although the stomping at last Saturday's game didn't beat Marshawn Lynch's 2011 seismic record, the biggest reading came when Kam Chancellor returned an interception and ran 90 yards for the first touchdown of his career.
According to Komo News, last week scientists with the University of Washington and Pacific Northwest Seismic Network prepared for Saturday's NFC playoff game by setting up three monitoring stations at CenturyLink Field which helped them "to gauge movement in the stands." The technology measured vibrations in the ground and allowed the public to monitor seismic activity in real time by streaming it from their phones. Way cool!
