Safe Partying For Halloween

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Halloween weekend can be a dangerous time for drivers and pedestrians. And with all of the activity downtown, you want to make sure you're safe on the road and on the streets.

"The number one safety concern for us is DUI enforcement," said Traci Trapani, Sacramento Police Department.

Trapani recommends calling a taxi or using a ride-sharing service app. Teaming up with Sacramento Police Department, Uber has two drop-off and pick-up zones this weekend: one on 28th between J and K streets and the other on L Street between 10th and 11th.

"I think they help with traffic control, it makes it a little hard sometimes because people don't always want to be that far from their location, they have to walk," said Uber Driver Tina Loesch.

The idea is to cut down on traffic congestion near the most popular areas in town.

"If that's what it's going to be, I guess I'll have to go to that location and go there," said Trace Martin.

Throughout the weekend, Sacramento police has more officers out and on the lookout for drunk drivers.

And if you plan on drinking, Officer Traci Trapani recommends that people think about transportation before you head out for the night.

"You wanna make sure that you plan ahead and have a safe route to get home" she said.

Over at Republic, bouncer Kevin Aguilar said with beefed up security, he's got a good feeling about tonight's festivities.

"Honestly I have four or five guys running tonight, we constantly make rounds, a lot of different eyes looking at these people," Aguilar said.

But regardless of how you spend the holiday weekend, the key to keeping yourself safe is making smart decisions.

"Just make sure you don't drink and drive," Dustin Dao. "Uber, Lyft that's the safest way to do it."

If you do request an Uber or Lyft, make sure you have the right car, check the license plate and ask the driver for their name.
