Sacramento Zoo Welcomes Newborn Giraffe Over Weekend

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The Sacramento Zoo welcomed a new addition to their giraffe herd over the weekend.

Shani, the zoo's six-year-old Masai giraffe, gave birth on Sunday morning to a healthy 163-pound male calf. The newborn doesn't seem to have a name yet.

Zoo veterinarians are continuing to monitor the newborn and his mother.

"The two are not currently visible to the public; we will take cues from dam and the calf as to when they are ready to make their public debut," said  Matt McKim, Animal Collection Director at the Sacramento Zoo, in a statement.

The giraffes could make their debut in the coming weeks, McKim said.

A total of six giraffes are now housed at the Sacramento Zoo.

Masai giraffes can be as tall as six feet when they're born. They're able to stand within minutes.
