Sacramento Sushi Lovers Undeterred By Salmonella Scare Linked To Raw Tuna

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A salmonella scare linked to raw tuna has sickened 53 people in nine states, with most of the cases in California.

Raw tuna is used in many popular sushi dishes, and this outbreak is believed to be connected to sushi.

It's a busy Friday night at Lou's Sushi Restaurant in Midtown Sacramento. Owner Lou Valente says raw tuna only has a shelf life of two days.

"Major obstacles are keeping it cold and keeping it out of the light as long as possible," he said.

The outbreak has Valente concerned it could hit his bottom line.

"It could be detrimental if people really drop sushi all together," he said.

At nearby Osaka Sushi, owner Kevin Ho says the news has him extra cautious.

So far, the California Department of Public Health still doesn't know the source of the bad tuna.
