Sacramento SPCA Turning Away Strays To City, County Animal Shelters

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The Sacramento Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is turning away stray animals brought to its shelter as it says its bursting at the seams with dogs and cats.

Workers say the number of strays brought to the Sacramento facility has doubled in the past six years, going from hundreds a year to more than they can handle.

The biggest issue they say is people perceive the SPCA offering different care, when it's the same as the city and county animal shelters.

To battle that perception, they've launched a new campaign encouraging people to drop off strays at Sacramento County Animal Care on Bradshaw Road in Elk Grove, or the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento.
