Sacramento school bus for disabled students hit by vehicle in Del Paso Heights; Several injured

Truck that hit Sacramento special needs school bus was driven by minor

Several injuries were reported after a pickup truck ran through a stop sign and crashed into a school bus for students with disabilities in north Sacramento, officials said Wednesday.

Sacramento Fire said the collision happened just after 2:50 p.m. along Belden Street in the Del Paso Heights neighborhood and resulted in minor injuries.

Captain Justin Sykvia with Sacramento Fire said there were five students on the bus and seven people in the truck, a Toyota Tacoma. The California Highway Patrol's North Sacramento division said the seven people in the truck were all teenagers under 18.

Neighbors in the area told CBS Sacramento that they saw a white pickup truck run through a stop sign before hitting the bus, which the CHP later confirmed.

In total, nine people were being hospitalized for evaluation and treatment, which included all seven people in the truck due to complaints of pain. The Twin Rivers Unified School District, which confirmed one of its buses was involved in the crash, said a student and the bus driver were taken to a local hospital. The school district said no other students on the bus were injured.

Sylvia said the collision caused the truck to crash through a fence and into a shed at a residence. The CHP said it is not yet known if the teen driving the truck had a valid driver's license.
