Sacramento Republic Will Face Familiar Foe San Jose Earthquakes In Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — While Sacramento has its eyes on a possible Major League Soccer team, the Sacramento Republic FC will get another shot at a familiar MLS opponent next month.

With the Republic's 7-3 drubbing of Chula Vista FC, the defending USL Pro champions will face the San Jose Earthquakes in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

This is the second year for the Republic in this tournament. In 2014, they lost to the Earthquakes, 2-1, at Kezar Stadium. The Earthquakes would go on to lose in the next round to the eventual champion Seattle Sounders.

The cup stretches back to 1914 and pits both professional and amateur teams from various leagues in a tournament that stretches throughout the year.

The Republic lost a friendly match against the Earthquakes on Feb. 21, 1-0, at Bonney Field
