Sacramento Republic Plan To Expand Bonney Field Up To 3,500 Seats Approved

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The Sacramento Republic will be playing in a larger stadium next season after the Cal Expo Board of Directors approved expansion plans.

The plan calls for up to 3,500 more seats added to Bonney Field, which already seats 8,000.

The move sends a message to Major League Soccer, which is considering Sacramento among three potential cities for an expansion team. Two groups from Minnesota and one from Las Vegas are also in the running.

The Republic sold out every regular season and playoff game at Bonney Field in its inaugural season, where it won the USL Pro championship.

"The way we're tracking, we'll have probably over 9,000 season tickets by the start of the season, so yeah, we feel very good about having another sellout season," said team spokeswoman Erika Bjork.

Construction on the new seating will begin in January.
