Sacramento Planning Cash For Grass Program This Spring
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The city of Sacramento is ready to pay homeowners to convert their lawns into something more water-efficient during this year's drought.
A few months ago, Vicki Delgado got rid of her grass for a drought-resistant landscape in East Sacramento.
"Any time Dish Network comes out here to do any work, I just say, 'Come down the street. We're the only one on the block that has the cactus,'" she said. "'You can't miss it.'"
Sacramento's plan to convert more lawns like Vicki's could start as early as this spring, said William Granger with the city's Water Conservation department.
People could get up to $1,000 in rebates, and the program could start with $100,000, though he couldn't tell us exactly where that startup money would come from.
"We're still working on those details," he said.
If you've already converted your lawn, you won't be eligible for a rebate. But Vicki says that's OK, she's still helping out through the drought.
"If I don't have to use the water, that's better off for everybody else," she said.
