Sacramento police detain suspect in deadly Oak Park shooting after hours of negotiating

Sacramento police engage in standoff with shooting suspect in Oak Park

Sacramento police said they detained a suspect in a deadly shooting in the Oak Park area on Thursday after hours of negotiations.

Police said the suspect was connected to a shooting that happened around 1:15 p.m. in the area of Washington Avenue between 14th Avenue and 17th Avenue. Officers said the victim, a man, died at the scene. 

The police department said the suspect took off from the scene of a shooting and was located in a vehicle. When officers tried to stop the suspect, a pursuit was initiated before coming to an end along the 3300 block of 12th Avenue, about half a mile from the shooting scene. 

Armored vehicles and crisis negotiators responded to the scene and were able to get the suspect to surrender peacefully around 6:45 p.m. The suspect's identification has not been released.

The California Highway Patrol said the northbound Highway 99 off-ramp at 12th Avenue was closed for the incident. 

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to take over the investigation. The identification of the victim has not been released.
