Sacramento Man Faces 2 Years In Prison For Arranging Fake Marriages
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A Northern California man has pleaded guilty to arranging fake marriages to bring people into the United States from India.
The office of U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner announced Friday that 61-year-old Sippy Lal of Sacramento could spend up to two years in federal prison on a conspiracy charge. Prosecutors say he admitted to filing 25 fraudulent documents to U.S. immigration authorities that helped at least nine people enter the United States.
Federal prosecutors say Lal recruited U.S. citizens, paying them thousands of dollars to fly to India to meet and take photos with purported spouses.
They say two of Lal's conspirators have already pleaded guilty and been sentenced to spend two or more years in prison.
Lal's attorney could not be reached Sunday for comment.
