Sacramento Kings Using Deposits For 2014-15 Season Tickets To Support Literacy Programs

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The Sacramento Kings are donating up to $100,000 to organizations in the Sacramento region that promote literacy and reading.

Until March 3, the team is donating the $200 deposit it receives from each season ticket order for the 2014-2015 season to four separate organizations, with each organization receiving up to $25,000 each.

The Sacrament Public Library is one of those organizations.

"This donation will help ensure our children are at appropriate reading level by the end of the third grade, the critical age when students transition from learning to read to reading to learn," said Rivkah K. Sass, director of the Sacramento Public Library system. "I commend the Kings for stepping up to help provide those resources."

A library spokesperson says the money will be used to fund 1,600 reading programs offered each year that serve as many as 65,000 children.

The other organizations benefiting from the donations are United Way's STAR Readers project; The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE)'s Preschool Bridging Model Plus; and Sacramento READS!
