Sacramento Eyeing Improvements To Breathe Life Into Broadway

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento wants to make improvements to a busy street, with city leaders announcing a preliminary plan to improving Broadway.

City officials say they're just starting the process to figure out what the historic street needs to breathe life into it from Front Street to Highway 99.

There is plenty of traffic, but nobody is stopping.

"We get a lot of cars going by, but they're going by really fast and they are not stopping," said David Gull with New Helvetia Brewing Company at 18th and Broadway. He says he's excited to hear the city is stepping up.

"A lot of effort has been focused in downtown and midtown, and other communities, but Broadway is finally starting to get some attention," he said.

Sacramento City Planner Sparky Harris stays the street is just starting the journey to figure out how it can help improve the street, which will make it easier for businesses to thrive.

"The street infrastructure could use a little upgrading to make it more conducive to alternative modes, biking, walking, even make it better for transit as well," Harris said.

It's something that Gull echoes.

"We want them to drive through a little slower make it safer for our bicycle customers and our pedestrian customers," he said.

The city is looking at a range of possibilities, including removing a lane of traffic and possibly adding medians, street parking or bike lanes. That would make Broadway more cozy than highway.

City planners will meet with the Broadway Corridor community next week to discuss their ideas. As for a price tag, it's unclear since the project hasn't even been drawn up yet.

But there will be a new neighbor on Broadway. The Kitchen announced on Friday that it's moving from its location on Hurley Way to Broadway.
