Suspect dead after shooting near Galt involving deputies, sheriff says
An investigation is underway after a shooting involving a deputy near Galt on Friday left a suspect dead.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a deputy-involved shooting occurred west of Galt, along New Hope Road. The scene is closer to the community of Thornton off of Interstate 5.
The incident began around 7 a.m. when deputies responded to a report that a woman may be in distress on the side of the road in a silver sedan, said Sacramento County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Edward Igoe. Once at the scene, deputies contacted a man and a woman inside the vehicle.
After speaking with the woman, who said she was not safe, she was brought to a patrol vehicle for her safety, Igoe said. It was at this time that the man pulled out a shotgun from his vehicle, Igoe said.
Igoe said the deputy tried to deescalate the situation for several minutes and requested the man drop the gun. However, Igoe said the suspect was shot by a deputy and died at the scene.
No deputies were hurt, the sheriff's office says.
The identity of the suspect has not been released.
