Sacramento County Adds Cesar Chavez Holiday

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) — Sacramento County is adding the Cesar Chavez holiday to its list of recognized holidays.

The holiday is recognized statewide in honor of the late farm labor leader with a day off, but Sacramento County's 11,500 employees didn't fall under that.

Now Sacramento County Supervisors have added March 31 as an annual county holiday and day of service.

Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna spoke to CBS13 about his push for the official day of service for all county employees.

"Similar to the way we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day," he said. "I think that's very important to really have the memory of Cesar Chavez reflected in our activities on a day off."
