Sacramento City Manager John Shirey Stepping Down Later This Year

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento's city manager has asked the mayor and City Council not to extend his contract, meaning he's done later this year.

John Shirey believes he's accomplished a lot during his tenure with the city, but he says one issue he still wants to tackle and its homeless crisis.

"Well I've decided to run for President," he said offering levity during his serious announcement.

For five years, Shirey has been responsible for Sacramento's budget of $940 million.

Shirey isn't leaving until Nov. 18, but the decision is coming out now so city leaders need time to find his replacement.

"We're contracting with a recruitment firm to take a look at that," said Sacramento City Councilman Jay Schenirer.

Shirey says since his appointment in 2011, he has helped reshape the fiscal and literal landscape of the capital city. He's responsible for negotiating the construction the Golden 1 Center.

"I expect that we're going to add to the accomplishment list that we've had so far," he said.

Shirey said the city would present a solution to the homeless problem at Tuesday's City Council meeting.
