Sac State's President To Retire At End Of School Year

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Alexander Gonzalez, Sacramento State's President of the last 11 years, announced his impending retirement Thursday.

Gonzalez made the announcement at Sac State's Fall Address Thursday morning.

"Public higher education, especially public higher education in the CSU, has been my life-long passion.  But after decades of service, it's time for me to find other ways that I can contribute to the lives of students in our communities," Gonzalez said during the address.

Numerous improvements and expansions came to Sac State during Gonzalez' tenure, including new doctoral, honors and masters programs at the school.

The school's University Bookstore, the refurbish of Hornet Stadium, and the new recreation and wellness center known as The WELL were all high-visibility construction projects completed during Gonzalez' tenure.

Gonzalez came to Sac State in 2003 following a stint as president of CSU San Marcos. He had also worked as a faculty member, department chair and provost over 18 years at Fresno State.

California State University notes that Gonzalez is one of the longest-serving presidents in the system.

Gonzalez will be retiring at the end of the 2014-15 academic year.
