Roseville Police Warning Residents Thieves Are Taking Advantage Of Open Garage Doors
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — Roseville Police say they are recovering stolen property from pawn shops following a rash of garage burglaries in the city.
John Kent is one of the victims of a crime spike in an upscale suburb that has homeowners reconsidering their habits.
"It's a violation," he said. "Just because my garage door is open, doesn't mean it's an invitation to come into my garage and take things out if it."
Like many people in the neighborhood, his family left the garage door up while they were home, and someone took the chance to drive up and steal his bike.
Roseville Police say criminals are driving into the area for expensive items stored in garage they can pawn for drug money. Half of all home break-ins since July have been garage burglaries.
The spike has police fanning out volunteers warning homeowners.
"There just seems to be a shotgun effect, they'll hit here, they'll hit there, mainly they hit places that are fast getaways," said volunteer Joe Van Zant.
Police arrested one man last week they believe is responsible for at least five separate garage burglaries. Kent's bike was found at a pawn shop, and he's waiting to get it back from police impound.
