Rising Cost Of EpiPens Putting Families, Schools In Pinch

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The price of EpiPens has gone up from just over $100 in 2009 to more than $600 today.

The drug inside EpiPens is just a couple bucks.

Experts say it's the virtual monopoly the manufacturer has that's driving up the cost.

And that has parents concerned.

Mylan, the manufacturer, says the EpiPen's price changes to better reflect important product features.

In California, schools are required by law to have EpiPens on hand just in case a child has a severe allergic reaction.

The drug maker has a program that is supplying schools with the pens free of charge for now.
