Rifle, Other Equipment Stolen From Shasta County Deputy's Car

REDDING, Calif. (AP) -- A Northern California sheriff's department says a rifle, handgun, and other professional equipment were stolen from the personal vehicle of one of its deputies.

The Shasta County Sheriff's Office said the deputy was off-duty when someone broke into the vehicle in Redding late Monday or early Tuesday.

The rifle was a Colt M4 tactical weapon specially made for law enforcement. The hand gun was the deputy's semi-automatic .45 caliber service pistol.

Also taken were a duty belt outfitted with handcuffs, pepper spray, a baton, and a handheld radio.

The sheriff's department says it is conducting an internal investigation to determine if the equipment was properly stored and secured.
