Rescue Crews Called Out After Homeless Encampment Floods

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Fire crews performed a water rescue at a homeless encampment in North Sacramento.

The scene was next to the Steelhead Creek Canal near North Natoma Street.

Overnight rains caused water level in the canal to rise, trapping two people in the center of it.

One victim says she was surprised how fast the water rose.

"When we first hit the bed it was like a foot … but when we woke up, it was full of water," Ashalana McCanahan said.

She says she will now have to find somewhere safer to stay. She hopes to collect her belongings once the water recedes.
