Record Lows Recorded As Cold Snap Covers Central Valley

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Freeze warnings are in effect for the early morning hours across the valley as cold weather continues this weekend.

A record low temperature of 27 degrees was recorded at Sacramento Executive Airport Saturday morning, beating the old record of 28 set in 1952. While not official just yet, it also looks like a record low of 28 was recorded in Stockton.

Temperatures could be even colder late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, with temperatures possibly reaching into the mid-20s to low 30s throughout much of the Central Valley. Some areas could be below freezing for several hours, according to the National Weather Service.

Numerous warming centers have opened. In Sacramento, the Union Gospel Mission at 400 Bannon Street and the Winter Sanctuary at 1400 North C Stree have opened their doors. Anyone seeking more information can call 211.

Later in the week, more wet and cold weather could be on the way. According to NWS forecasts, between 0.25-0.75 inches of rain could hit the valley on Thursday. Between 4-12 inches of snow could fall above 5,000 feet.

Forecasters warn that winds could be stronger than they have been with this coming storm, compared to the last few storms we've seen.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has put together this webpage with tips for preparing for cold weather.
