Railyards Project Promises New Neighborhoods, But Where Are The Schools?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A high-ranking Sacramento City Unified School District administrator says the massive railyards development is missing one thing: a school.

The district's chief operations officer says the development is so massive it could de-stabilize the district.

SCUSD spokesperson Gabe Ross says the district wants to build a school in the Railyards, but so far the district and developers have not agreed on land.

"So the trick for us is, how do we stay far enough ahead of the developments so that we have ample space for kids when they show up," Ross said.

The massive 244 Acre Railyards development will include 6,000 to 10,000 housing units.

According to studies done by the district, that will add 1,900 elementary school students, 300 middle school students and 400 high-school students to the neighborhood.

Currently, Washington Elementary School is the only elementary school open near the railyards footprint. It has a capacity of 350 students.
