Potential Evidence Against Lawmaker Remains Sealed
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge says grand jury testimony and other potential evidence against suspended California state Sen. Ronald Calderon should remain under seal and not be handed over to his attorney at this time.
Calderon has pleaded not guilty to charges that he accepted bribes totaling $100,000 in cash and trips and funneled some of the money to his children.
U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder said at a brief hearing Tuesday in Los Angeles that prosecutors were correct to seek protections for potential evidence obtained through a grand jury and certain FBI records that could be used in the political corruption case against Calderon.
Calderon's lawyer, Mark Geragos, had disagreed with provisions federal prosecutors wanted to attach to the handover.
