Police Warn Thieves Have Eye On Truck Tailgates In Sacramento Area

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Criminals are targeting a vital part of trucks in a bid for quick cash.

A brand-new truck sits in the driveway of Land Park homeowner Emily Murphy and her family.

But the tailgate on her truck is something thieves are after—one with a backup camera.

Sacramento Police put out a warning that there have been more tailgate thefts recently in the region from Rancho Cordova to Elk Grove. They're pretty easy to get off if there's no lock.

John Tran with Auto Tech Service and Repair in Elk Grove says trucks with backup cameras are a hot commodity among crooks. He recommends a lock for the tailgate and possible an aftermarket alarm that will sound if someone starts tooling with your tailgate.

If they want to prevent it from possibly getting stolen, put one of those truck lid on there, it has two locks on there," he said.

Anything that will make a thief have to work harder or take more time to swipe their payday will make it less likely you'll be a victim.
