Police: Men Posing As Fake City Employees In Davis

DAVIS (CBS13) — Davis Police are warning there are people posing as fake city employees and targeting homes.

Detectives are asking people in Davis to be on alert and help them track down two men seen dressed in orange vests with "The City of Davis" written on the back.

Residents say the men picked the wrong neighborhood, because most people have lived there for a long time and they know each other and look out for each other.

It was a police knock on the door, but Nancy Callahan wasn't expecting any company.

"They said that this was the address they were supposed to come to and I said absolutely not," she said.

Nancy said no to two men in their 50s dressed in orange vests, claiming to be city utility workers there to fix sprinklers.

"The City of Davis doesn't check the timers on sprinklers," she said.

Plus, she says the men acted suspicious. One scoped out the front of the house while the other asked about her dog and if it bites. She says they left in an unmarked van.

Davis Police Lt. Tom Waltz says the fake workers fit the bill for burglars who plan to return later.

"It's not uncommon for thieves, and burglars to case houses- do surveillance and in some cases dress up as utility workers to test security like the dogs, to see if the homeowner are at home," he said.

Police warn neighbors to ask for identification and take down license plates if it's safe to do.

Nancy says she's naturally on guard, be she's since warned her elderly neighbors who may be more vulnerable.
