Police: Man Steals Package Delivered To Police Station

ODENTON, Md. (AP) — Anne Arundel County police say surveillance video from a police station shows a man stealing a package that had just been delivered.

The package was delivered to the lobby of the western district station in Odenton on Thursday, but didn't make it to its intended recipient. After the delivery service confirmed it had been delivered, police checked surveillance video.

Police say the video shows 53-year-old Michael Leonard of Crofton, who was waiting in the lobby to renew his sex offender registration, snapping up the package and walking out. Police say he returned without the package and was processed.

Officers went to Leonard's home, where police say they found the package in a vehicle. The package was returned to its owner.

Police say Leonard was arrested Monday and charged with theft.

Police in the Sacramento area are taking steps to put an end to package theft. They are leaving GPS-laced packages to bait-and-track criminals, and the strategy seems to be paying off. They say the best way to prevent package theft is to be proactive and schedule deliveries when you're home.
