Police: Sacramento Man Shot Dead By Robbers In His Backyard

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A man was shot dead in his own backyard after police say he interrupted burglars trying to steal from his home.

Pam Taylor lives next door and heard the single deadly gunshot just before 10 p.m. on Sunday.

"I don't really like that at all, cause me and my daughter live here—my husband passed away," she said.

Police say Ricardo Minjares, 42, heard noises coming from his backyard that sounded like burglars. They say that's when Minjares checked to see what it was. The suspects took off, but not before firing at him through the fence.

"My daughter saw through the fence, and she even said 'Oh mom that guy is laying on the ground; I think he's dead,'" Taylor said.

Investigators say other family members who were at home found him and called 911. Minjares was shot once in the chest and died at the scene.

Neighbor Lisa Wicks says her daughter's bike was also recently stolen from her home, just a few doors down. Since then, she's put up security cameras around her house to keep watch.
