SUTTER COUNTY -- A suspect has been arrested in connection with an hours-long standoff at an apartment in Live Oak.

According to the Sutter County Sheriff's Office, there was a shooting early Friday morning. The suspect in the shooting, 39-year-old Cuitlahuac Padilla, reportedly ran into the Maple Park Apartment Complex and barricaded himself inside one of the units. While he does not live in the complex, he is a frequent visitor, they say.

At around 2:10 p.m., authorities went into the apartment unit where the suspect was hiding in the attic. He fell through the ceiling and was arrested. He faces charges of attempted murder.

A sheriff's office spokesperson says Padilla may have also attempted to start a fire in the apartment complex, but the fire was extinguished before it could spread.

All residents in the surrounding units had been evacuated as a precaution.

Two schools that are close to the incident, Live Oak High School and Live Oak Middle School, were also placed on lockdown.

Padilla has been booked into Sutter County Jail and is being held without bail.
