Police To Increase Patrol After Bullets Strike Elementary School

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Police will have extra security at New Joseph Bonnheim Community Charter School Thursday after a shooting left multiple bullet holes in a building while school was still in session.

It happened Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. near Tahoe Park. One witness said she heard about eight or nine shots go off. Police say two shots struck a building while one bullet broke through a window where a female employee was inside. Officials are calling it a close call, and luckily, no one was hurt.

Police canvassed the campus and the school was placed on lockdown after the incident. School officials say parents were notified through a recorded alert and asked to pick up their children.

Police say the school does not appear to have been the target, but officers could not give a motive. Two witnesses say the shots came from a car driving down eastbound on 21st Avenue.

Sacramento City Unified said the school will resume as usual Thursday and said they do not believe students or parents should be concerned about their safety at school tomorrow.
