Pittsburgh Pirates Bringing 3 Catchers, San Francisco Giants Extend Bullpen For Wild Card Game

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pirates opted for depth at catcher while the San Francisco Giants lengthened their bullpen for Wednesday night's NL wild-card game.

The Pirates carried only nine pitchers on the 25-man roster, adding starters Jeff Locke and Vance Worley as insurance should starter Edinson Volquez falter. Pittsburgh made Chris Stewart and Tony Sanchez active with Russell Martin nursing a tight hamstring. Martin is scheduled to start and bat fourth.

San Francisco placed 10 pitchers on the one-game roster, including Jake Peavy, who would be available if starter Madison Bumgarner gets into early trouble.

The Giants also have six rookies available to make their playoff debuts, while veteran outfielder Michael Morse will sit out. Morse hasn't played since injuring his oblique on Sept. 20. He is expected to be available should San Francisco advance.
