Pets, Big And Small, Not Forgotten In Chaos Of Valley Fire

CALISTOGA (CBS13) – Cute, cuddly and evacuated along with so many other pets and their owners, a little of two-week-old puppies are going to be okay.

The puppies were saved by volunteers and brought to the Calistoga fairgrounds, where many other evacuees from the Valley Fire are staying.

Veterinarian Steve Franklin from the Calistoga Pet Clinic has been helping treat the animals that have shown up.

"These guys are survivors of the fire. They would have been euthanized if we weren't able to get up there and get them," Franklin said of the puppies.

From dogs to cats to horses, and even a calf hitching a ride in the back of an SUV.

"Some of the animals have been undergoing a lot of stress," Franklin said. "Fortunately, [there are] a lot of great people around here, a lot of resources."

Joy Fleming evacuated her family along with her three horses from Middletown. She says the donations for the animals alone here has been incredible.

"There is everything from water to rakes, to horse treats [and] dog food," Fleming said.

It's an evacuation center that's also catering to people's Pets of all shapes and sizes.

So many donations have poured that organizers say they need more volunteers to help sort it all.

There is no timetable for the evacuees to go home and find if they have anything left.
