Oregon Suspect Pleads Not Guilty To California Charges

YREKA, Calif. (AP) — A man charged with murder in the death of an Oregon woman has pleaded not guilty to separate charges related to a shooting and carjacking in California.

KTVL reports ( http://bit.ly/2anhcfH ) that 31-year-old Edwin Lara entered the not guilty pleas Friday to attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges. Authorities say Lara shot a man at a hotel in Yreka, California, on Tuesday, then stole a car with a woman and her two sons still inside.

Lara is also facing charges in Oregon in the death of 23-year-old Kaylee Sawyer. Sawyer's body was found Tuesday at the bottom of a small canyon between the Central Oregon towns of Redmond and Sisters.

Lara's wife reported that Lara had told her he hit Sawyer with a vehicle, killing her, then panicked and hid her body, according to documents filed in court.

Joseph Allison, Siskiyou County assistant district attorney, says Lara will remain jailed in California without bail.
