One Year After Fire, Maidu Park Grass Becomes Feeding Ground For Goats
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — One year after a devastating fire, a popular Roseville park has a brand new attraction designed to cut the fire risk.
While you'll see plenty of people with their dogs in Maidu Park, a new animal is roaming the grounds.
"I was like, 'What the heck?" Roseville resident Scott Pinney said. "We saw them driving down the road when they were way over there and we thought, 'Are those goats?'"
The goats aren't part of some new petting zoo. They're part of a plan by the city to take a bite out of grass fires like the one that ripped through the park in 2013.
All 600 of the goats will get plenty of food from the tall grass they're chewing up.
"All it takes is one match, one cigarette, one stupid person, and we'd have a repeat of last year." said Else Marie, whose home was burned by the Maidu Fire.
Brian Castelluccio with the city says he's pro-goat because they go where mowers can't.
"People would rather see that than seeing people out there spraying pesticides, or having heavy machinery out there all day," he said.
The goats will be around for another two weeks to much the rest of the park, something people here say isn't a baaad idea after all.
