Olympic Board Recognizes Cheerleading, Muay Thai As Sport

Two new sports have been provisionally recognized by the International Olympic Committee: the combat sport Muay Thai and cheerleading.

The vote, which happened on Tuesday, means that both sports could soon apply for inclusion during Olympics competition.

Back in 2015, California lawmakers approved a law that made cheerleading an officially sanctioned sport.

Several other new sports were voted to be included in the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, including skateboarding and surfing.

The moves are seen as a way for the games to appeal to a younger audience.
