Oldest Giraffe At Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Dies

VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) - The oldest giraffe at a Northern California amusement and animal park has died.

Nairobi, a 25-year-old female, was euthanized this week at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo.

Park officials say vets and animal care staff determined that her quality of life had diminished. Giraffes in human care typically live into their late teens or early 20s.

Nairobi stood 18 feet tall and weighed about 1,600 pounds.

The reticulated giraffe was born in the park in 1989 and was one of its original animals. She was one of four giraffes at the park and had no offspring.

Giraffes are considered threatened in the wild because of habitat loss.
