Officials: 95 San Quentin Inmates Have Legionnaires' Symptoms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Officials say the number of inmates at San Quentin State Prison under observation for respiratory illness symptoms has increased to 95.

State corrections department officials said Wednesday the inmates are under observation for Legionnaires' disease but have not been diagnosed.

Six inmates are confirmed to have the disease. There are no confirmed cases among staff members. Symptoms included high fever, chills and a cough.

They are being treated at San Quentin's on-site medical unit.

Hot evening meals have resumed for inmates, and all general population and reception-center inmates have received showers. Segregated inmates and those on death row have not received showers.

Officials have yet to determine the source of the outbreak.
