Deputy Wounded In Sacramento County Shooting; Suspect In Custody

9:35 p.m. UPDATE: The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says the suspect has been taken into custody.

The suspect in the officer-involved shooting was taken into custody at around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday on the second floor of the Red Roof Inn.

Investigators say a robot spotted the suspect on the second floor in the fetal position. No weapon was found on him when he was taken into custody.

8:30 p.m. UPDATE: The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says the deputy who was wounded on Tuesday was working overtime as part of an effort to remedy problems at the light-rail station.

Sheriff's department spokesman Tony Turnbull wouldn't elaborate on what issues prompted the extra patrols.

The deputy's condition has stabilized and he is expected to survive.

Sacramento Regional Transit has been working in the last two years to improve its image after several problems involving fights and a 2014 murder on board a train. That effort quickened last year as officials prepared for the grand opening of the Golden 1 Center in Downtown Sacramento, which was supposed to increase ridership.

But in May, officials revealed a rider deficit of more than 2 million passengers on buses and light rail. That drop also coincides with a rate hike that was meant to provide more security and fare enforcement on trains and at transit stations.

7:15 p.m. UPDATE: The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says a deputy was shot in the face during an altercation at a light rail station on Tuesday.

The incident happened just before 6 p.m. Dispatchers got a call about a fight involving the deputy and a passenger, but it's not known what led up to that fight. Shots were fired, and the suspect fled the scene.

A Sacramento County Sheriff's helicopter spotted the suspect fleeing the scene toward a nearby Red Roof Inn. SWAT officers have surrounded the scene and are working to get the suspect out.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Spokesman Tony Turnbull says the deputy was talking when he left the scene.

The deputy is contracted with Regional Transit for calls for service with the department.

Nearby businesses were also evacuated.
