Near-Whiteout Conditions Greet Sierra Visitors On Sunday

NYACK (CBS13) – It's been a rough day for many, to say the least.

One Shell gas station was more like an assembly line for most of Sunday, with semi-trucks coming in to get chained and snow plows heading out to clear the roads.

It was so busy that one employee said three other gas stations west of Nyack were completely out of gas.

One Bay Area family put their own spin on the snowy weather and turned the slush into a family snowball fight.

"It's not disappointing. This is what we came up here for," the father said.

Others didn't have quite as much fun. It wasn't the lack of snow, but too much of it.

"Didn't take 'em out we got socked in," a driver said. "I don't think we are gonna get out!"

There was no shortage of semis at the shell station truck stop.

Aiko and her husband were on their way up to Sparks, Nevada from Stockton and got blocked in. It was bad timing, as other semis were preparing for the chain control checkpoint down Interstate 80 at Baxter.

Not wanting to spend the night in a snow storm, Aiko and her husband were determined to get out of the semi gridlock.

"It's our first time getting stuck, and I'm hoping our last time," Aiko said.

It took some real effort, but Aiko and her husband made it out safely.

There were reports of some accidents on I-80 Sunday night that caused some backups, but the roads are still open.
