Movement To Change The Name Of Columbus Day Gaining Momentum

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - For most of the country, today is Columbus Day. But many communities are working to change that.

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Seattle Sunday, calling for the holiday to be abolished.

"If we don't learn that history we won't have the answers to people to solve some of the things in the trauma," said one demonstrator.

Several American cities now consider today Indigenous Peoples Day, to honor the Native Americans who were here before Columbus.

Berkley was the first to change the holiday's name back in 1992; Sebastopol Santa Cruz were next. On the west coast, Portland, Oregon and Olympia, Washington also made the change.
