Modesto police shoot suspect that struck officer with vehicle

Officer-involved shooting under investigation in Modesto

Authorities say an officer-involved shooting took place overnight in Modesto after a police officer was struck by a suspect's vehicle.

The Modesto Police Department says, just after 1 a.m., officers responded near Boulder Avenue and E. Hatch Road to investigate reports of a shooting.

At the scene, police say an officer spotted a vehicle that matched the description of one they were looking for.

Then, as the officer went to contact the driver, police say the suspect took off and struck the officer. That's when an officer-involved shooting happened, police say, where the suspect was shot.

Authorities later arrested the suspect, but it's unclear exactly where. The incident did prompt a full closure of southbound Highway 99, along with the northbound fast lane, through the early morning hours Friday. All lanes are were back open around 5 a.m.

The name of the suspect has not been released. The injured officer was taken to the hospital and has since been discharged.
