'Catastrophic Failure' Cuts Fireworks Show At Cal Expo Short

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The fire marshal has cut the fireworks show at Cal Expo short after a mishap backstage.

Authorities say one of the large mortars that fires off the fireworks suffered a "catastrophic failure," causing a small grass fire within the infield of the grandstands. The fire was never near the public and firefighters quickly put out the flames.

People at Cal Expo said that the show was abruptly stopped a little after 9:30 p.m. and sirens could be heard backstage.

The pyrotechnic crew will review what exactly went wrong.

Cal Expo police say no one was hurt in the incident.

Early Sunday afternoon, Cal Expo unceremoniously launched the remaining fireworks to dispose of them.
