Merced teen accused of drive-by shooting that put Modesto schools on lockdown

MODESTO — A Merced teen was arrested in connection to a drive-by shooting that happened near schools in Modesto last week, police said Monday.

The 17-year-old was located Saturday evening in Turlock and was taken into custody. He has since been booked into Stanislaus County Juvenile Hall and faces charges of assault with a firearm and other weapons charges related to being near a school and being a minor.

The shooting happened at around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 19 in the area of Sunrise and Orangeburg Avenues. No injuries were reported, but the shooting places nearby Downey High School, Elliott Alternative Education Center and Muir Elementary School on a brief lockdown.

The suspect was not identified due to his age. No other arrests were announced.
