Marshall Sperbeck, Sac State's Head Football Coach, Resigns

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sacramento State University's head football coach Marshall Sperbeck announced his resignation Friday.

Sperbeck has coached Sac State for the past seven years, posting a 35-44 overall record.

"I appreciate Marshall's dedication to improving our football team and promoting the success of our student-athletes. I want to assure our student-athletes, fans and supporters that the University will work quickly with interim coach Sears to ensure a successful transition and 2014 season for the football program," said Dr. Alexander Gonzalez, Sac State's President, in a statement.

No reason for the resignation has been given by Sperbeck or the school.

Arguably, the most memorable moments from Sperbeck's tenure came when Sac State edged out two Pac-12 giants. In 2011, Sac State managed to eek past Oregon State by a score of 29-28. The following year, Sac State beat University of Colorado on a last second field goal, winning by a score of 30-28.

Sperbeck coached at Foothill College in Los Altos for 15 years before coming to Sac State.

Defensive coordinator Jody Sears has been named the interim head coach.
