Manteca Worries New Bass Pro Shop In San Jose Could Leech Away Customers

MANTECA (CBS13) — A new Bass Pro Shop opening in San Jose could take business away from the company's Manteca location.

For some, adventure into the great outdoors begins with a trip to the Bass Pro Shop.

"I try to come here once a month," said Dan Maloon.

He comes from San Leandro, and he's not alone. Several people in the Bay Area shop in Manteca despite getting a store of their own.

Huge crowds flooded San Jose's location on Wednesday, and Rocklin added a store last month.

Virginia Camacho with the Manteca Visitors and Convention Center was nervous the new locations would pull customers away.

"Bass Pro draws in so many people. You know, as you drive passed Highway 120 you can't help but notice how many cars are drawn in, because it's quite and attraction," she said.

Manteca Bass Pro Shop General Manager Jackson Felt says there's nothing to worry about, and each store is different. Manteca's location is made to look like Yosemite National Park.

It's the only two-story store and it has a waterfall with an aquarium of Delta fish and a trout pond.

Maloon says going east to Manteca is still easier than going to San jose.

"It's kind of like a maze going down there. We try to stay out of San Jose and San Francisco," he said.
