Mandatory Retirements Mean Smaller Police Force For California State Fair

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Cal Expo will have more than two-dozen fewer police officers employed during this year's California State Fair.

When the fair kicks off on Friday, there will only be 113 seasonal officers on staff, 25 fewer than last year.

Cal Expo officials say they learned last November about a state law requiring peace officers to retire after they turn 65 years old. All officers over that age had to go.

The fair plans on having the remaining seasonal officers work more hours to compensate for the loss, and they say the same number of officers will be working each day.
