Man Sleeping In Recycling Bin Survives Several Compactings

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man who was sleeping in a cardboard recycling bin is recovering after a truck scooped up the dumpster and compacted it several times.

The Albany Democrat Herald reports that 23-year-old Ivan Rosalio Mendez Perez suffered a fractured leg Thursday. He was in good condition at a Corvallis hospital last week.

Albany Capt. Eric Carter says the truck driver became aware of the problem when he heard Perez yelling and throwing cardboard out of the truck.

In 2011, the body of a 50-year-old homeless man, Gordon Lemke, was found when a load of cardboard was left at a waste sorting station.

It's not uncommon for homeless people in the region to sleep in dumpsters to stay warm and dry.

There have been several incidents in recent years of people getting injured or killed after being tossed into garbage trucks.
