LINCOLN (CBS13) – Trevor Frank had no idea that he'd ride in and save the day.
A photo captures the calf rescue in action, with the baby cow draped over the rancher's lap as they ride to safety on the back of a horse.
Frank had to rope the calf and throw him onto the horse and ride with him for about a mile or so to get him to the trailer, and finally take him to the Carman home ranch.
"He fought me for like two seconds on that saddle, and he let me pack him all the way up the camp," Frank said.
When the King Fire broke out, one of Frank's fellow ranchers needed help rescuing his cattle out of the mountains and out of harm's way.
"Those cows are his livelihood," Frank said.
That's when Frank went to the Union Valley Reservoir to gather as many cows as possible – and when he came across the calf.
"I would say about a week old, if that," Frank said.
Its mother was nowhere to be found.
Frank hoped the calf would be reunited with its mother back at the ranch. And, as fate would have it, the calf found its mom.
"It's really neat when they get reunited with their moms," Frank said.
Frank says the calf did seem hurt when he came across it, but it is being taken care of now at the ranch and is expected to be just fine.
